Richard and Lydia WEST were in the 1860 census of Russell township, Macon county with one child, Samuel J.

Samuel married Nancy? date unknown but before 1878. By 1878 son Calvert/Calvin West was born, all in Russell township. Calvert born Aug 29, 1878 married Clara Ellen TARPENNING on March 29, 1899 and died June 22, 1969.

I have the data on Calvert and Clara but wish to know more about his parents and grandparents. Where were they buried? Samuel and Nancy were in 1920 census but not 1930.

Can anyone help me with this family?

Leslie Bridges Kohler Sat Oct 13, 2007

My husband's KÖHLER immigrant was born in Melzow, Prussia. Christian F. KÖHLER (later spelled KOEHLER and other ways) arrived in the USA abt 1850 as a single man but md. Christiane Sophia Dorothea NEUMANN (or maybe NIEMANN) in 1868 in Wolcottsville, Niagara County, NY. And, it is his marriage record that shows him born in Melzow in the Uckermark. He wrote (in his naturalization papers) that he was born in Metz, but then that was in English, whereas his marriage record is written in German.

Christian's gravestone says that he was born in 1837. He fought, for the union, in the War Between the States.

We have much information about Christian's descendants, but know nothing of his siblings. His parents are listed in his marriage record as Christian KÖHLER (widower) and Maria BRAND. We know nothing further of his parents, and an online search of the German telephone directory shows no KÖHLERs living in Melzow today.

Christian and "Sopha" settled in Macon County, Missouri where they farmed. He died there in 1906; and she, in 1918. BTW, her parents (or possibly her father and step-mother) are buried in Bloomington, MO.

Always interested in family contact.

Thank you for any help.

I am trying to find any information on the family of Andrew J. and Martha J. MATHEWS who are found in the 1880 Macon Census at Richland. Andrew J. MATHEWS was born in Ohio and married his wife (a young widow) in Texas before moving to Mo.

Two children were born in Texas and the 1880 Macon county Census shows daughter Susan M. MATHEWS born in Texas aged 19. The 1860 Texas Census data shows Susan born in Texas late 1859 or early 1860 and an older son James M. MATHEWS born Texas ca. 1856.

The other 5 children in the mathews household in 1880 were all born in Mo. as follows William R.; Amanda R.; Missouri E.; Willard O. and George ages 17 to 4.

I have lots of information on Martha J. MATHEWS family and photos of her parents etc. She was one of a very large family and the names William R. and Missouri E. are names from her side of the family. We have been searching for the MATHEWS family for many years and was astounded to find them so far away from Texas. I am in hopes that someone can share data with me and I will do the same. Martha J. MATHEWS was an older sister of my great-great-grandfather.

Your help would be appreciated.

I have been trying to determine the maiden name of Elizabeth, the wife of David FELTON.

I found her obituary as follows:

Macon Republican: Mrs. Elizabeth FELTON, 71, died at her home in Bevier Aug 17, 1895 with cancer. She leaves to mourn one son, Moses Felton of Callao & two daughters, Mrs. J.W. WATSON of Bevier & Mrs. William HOWELL of Bynumville, Funeral at the Welsh Congregation Church where she was a member.

Does any one have access to Macon Co marriage records between 1880-1895? I believe the daughters names are Elizabeth WATSON and Maggie HOWELL. If I could find out what happened to these two daughters, it may help. This family was brought to Macon Co from Lawrence Co, OH, by an in-law, Moses MORGAN, who was at one time superintendent of the mines at Huntsville, and possibly of those at Bevier as well.

Anything would really be appreciated.

I am looking for information on my grandmother, Beulah Opal MASON, b. in Macon, 8 Jan 1878.

She died in Alameda, CA 14 Jan 1952.

She married William Ivan BANTA from Jacksonville, Randolph Co. 22 May 1897 in Stark Co., IL.

I am unsure who her parents were but on the census she said her mother was born in Missouri and her father in Kentucky. I seem to recall my mother saying her mother-in-law's mother's name was COOLEY.

Does anyone have any knowledge of her or them?

I am looking for information on the parents of George W. WALKER, b: 1857 Missouri; m: 1883 Fannin City, TX; d: 10 Jun 1905, Phillips, Coal City, Oklahoma.

In our family oral history it was said my grandfather Macon Geroge WALKER was named by his father (George W. WALKER listed above) "after where they were from". I have no written proof.

The only documents I have for my great-grandfather -- George W WALKER -- are the hand-written bible "Deaths" page which lists his age at death and his death-date, his obituary in the Lehigh Leader newspaper (Lehigh, OK) and the Fannin Co., TX marriage record of he and my ggrandmother.

Name: George WALKER
Home in 1900: Coalgate, Coal county, Indian Territory
Age: 43
Est. Birth Year: abt. 1857
Birthplace: Missouri
Father's birthplace: TN
Mother's birthplace: TN
Spouse's name: Marrie (read incorrectly, should be Minnie)
Race: white
Household members:
Clarence WALKER 15,
Macon WALKER 9,

James AUSTIN 25.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

I am researching Elizabeth COOLEY born abt. 1832 in MO. Died before 1870 census.

Elizabeth married George GARRISON, 25 Oct. 1857 in Macon Co. Mo.

1860 census of Macon; George GARRISON age 28, wife; Elizabeth age 28 and daughter Elizabeth age 2

1870 Census of Chariton Co.; George GARRISON is a widower age 37 with children:

Emily (Elizabeth) age 12
Levi age 9
William J, age 8
Harvey age 5.

It looks like Elizabeth died between 1865-1870 since her son Harvey is 5 in 1870. I know nothing else about Elizabeth. There were several Cooley's in Macon Co. MO, but I have no clue to which of these families she belonged to.

Thank you in advance for any information on these families.

My Grandmother, Virginia (Jenny) GOODDING HUNTER, born in Macon County on January 3rd, 1877, and her sister, Lucy GOODDING HALLIBURTON, born April 2nd, 1875, were baptized at Bellevue Church. Is it still in existence? Is there an address I could write to? I would love to see a picture of it, and to learn more about its history.

Jenny and Lucy GOODDING were the only children of James Redmond GOODDING and Jemima PINCKARD GOODDING and they grew up in La Plata and Sue City.

Lucy married Walter HALLIBURTON October 26th, 1902 in Pollock, Louisiana, though both were from Macon County.

Jenny married Walter Lee HUNTER on Thanksgiving Day, 1900 in Macon County. Walter was the son of William Henry HUNTER and Mary Rosetta BARLOW HUNTER of Adams County, Illinois and Knox County, Missouri and its environs. William Hunter had also lived in Iowa with his parents, Wyatt HUNTER and Susannah ADAMS/ADDAMS HUNTER.

If anyone has any information on these families, I would appreciate it.

Quentin Cabell Smith Tue Dec 19 2006

Researching the folowing:

Josiah SMITH and his wife, Martha or Mary nee FRENCH.

They left TN and settled ca 1830 in the area of Macon, Randolph and Chariton counties, MO, with sons:

1. Henry,
2.John Thompson,
3. James
4. Rev. Josiah S. SMITH,

and daughters:

1. Margaret,
2. Nancy,
3. Jane
4. Sarah.

Henry's wife, Mary nee HANNAH, came with them from TN.

Josiah, Sr. died in 1843 and was buried in Eldad Cemetery in the Moberly area, but there is hardly any other clue of the family in Randolph Co, so I'm tossing a bigger net. I would like to find Martha/Mary's death date and burial site.

Henry was the first constable of Chariton Twp and John was an early merchant there.

Margaret married an ALEXANDER.

James married, Wilhelmina CHRANE.

John Thompson SMITH married Sarah Ann GOODE.

Rev Josiah S. married Diannah WILKES.

Also researching Webster RUBEY (died after 1925) who was related to this SMITH family somehow.

Any help would be appreciated.
