OBITUARIES

I. M. McGee died at Tulsa, Oklahoma Monday, October 20. The remains are being shipped to Clarence where the funeral will take place Thursday morning, October 23 at 10:00. The services will be held at the Christian Church there. The body will be brought to Macon where interment will be made in Oakwood Cemetery by the side of his wife. He leaves two children. He is a brother of W. J. McGee of Macon. (yesterday's Macon Herald) Editor's note: Mr. McGee is well known in this city and was a brother of Mrs. J. J. Mrs. Mary J. Magee died at her home northeast of Macon city 29 March 1891. She was born in Barron County, Kentucky 7 Oct 1816 and united in marriage to William Magee 4 Dec 1834. They moved to Missouri in 1849. By this union were born ten children, five of them had preceded their mother. She was a member of the Baptist Church.

Mrs. Sarah C. Magee died 28 June 1913 in the Clarence community. Miss Sarah C. Mercer was born in Macon County 10 Nov 1852. Some forty years ago she was married to I. M. Magee and to this union four children were born - two of whom have preceded her and the remaining two a son, William and a daughter, Gladys survive. She moved to Clarence about 23 years ago. Funeral at the Christian Church in Clarence and interment in Oakwood Cemetery in Macon.

W. J. Magee, 79, died 19 Oct 1926 at his home in Macon. He was born near Kellogg in Macon Co., MO. He leaves one daughter, Miss Leila Magee.

William Magee died 8 Oct 1895 at his home northeast of Macon, MO at a ripe old age. He was the father of W. Jeff Magee of Macon. He was a member of the Baptist Church. The funeral took place at the Church near his home with interment in the family burying grounds.

Dell Magers -- Dell Magers, 87, died Wednesday, June 1 at 2:20 p.m. in a Kirksville nursing home where he had been since Saturday. He had been hospitalized a week before entering the nursing home. The son of Jimmie K. and Clementine (Herrin) Magers, he was born October 25, 1879 in Macon County. On February 7, 1900 at Elmer, he married Florence Patrick, who preceded him in death May 24, 1966. Also preceding him in death were one son, two sisters, and one grandchild. Surviving are one son, Ralph Magers of La Plata, one daughter, Mrs. Lewis (Billie) Pruett of Henrietta, two grandchildren, four nieces and one nephew. Mr. Magers was a lifelong resident of Macon County, where he had been engaged in farming near Gifford and Elmer until moving to La Plata. He was a member of the Elmer Baptist Church. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at two o'clock in the Elmer Baptist Church with Rev. Clyde McCullum of South Gifford officiating. Burial was in the Elmer Cemetery. The body was at the McCollum Funeral Home until noon on Friday, when it was taken to the church. Bearers were Gene Hawkins, Clair Johnson, Dutch Lynch, Hubert Thurman, Hollis Shumaker and Wendall Mathis. La Plata Home Press, 9 June 1966

J. G. Magers, 80, died at his home in La Plata, Mo., 10 June 1931. His wife survives along with a daughter, Mrs. Albert Ralston and a grandson, Elvin C. Bragg of La Plata.

John D. Magers -- John D. Magers, 64, of Los Angeles, CA, died Sunday in a Stanton, CA Hospital where he had been a patient over a year. The son of Clarence and Mary (Keyte) Magers, he was born September 9, 1904 near Elmer, MO. On August 3, 1926 he married Rena Bell Christian, who survives. Also surviving are one son, John D. Magers, Jr. of Los Angeles, one daughter Mrs. George Beard of Torrace, CA; three brothers, Otis of Bevier, Kenneth Earl of Kirksville and Melvin of Elmer; one sister, Mrs. Opal Vincent of Kirksville. Mr. Magers was raised northeast of Elmer and lived there until he moved to CA in 1945. He worked as an electrician for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., until his retirement two years ago. He was a Veteran of World War II and was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God of Paramount, CA. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home. Joseph G. Magers -- Joseph G. Magers, seventy-nine, prominent citizen, banker and stockman of La Plata, died suddenly at his home here Wednesday, June 10, 1931, from a stroke of paralysis. He had gone to the kitchen to start a fire when members of the family heard him fall and rushed to the room and found him unconscious. Death followed immediately. The daughter, Mrs. Ada Rolston, his grandson and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Bragg, were with him when the end came. His wife, in an adjoining room, has not been expected to live for several days and he had been in constant attendance on her. Joseph G. Magers was born in Macon County August 31, 1851, a son of Yancy and Matilda (Grear) Magers. He was married December 31, 1872 to Mary A. Carter, daughter of LeRoy and Harriett Stevens Carter. She is also a native of Macon County, born January 17, 1849. Two children were born to this union. The oldest child died in infancy and the other is Mrs. Ada V., now the wife of E.M. Rolston. He lived on his father's farm until his marriage and went to Texas and farmed four years. He returned and settled in Adair County. He moved to La Plata eighteen years ago, this fall. In 1904 he assisted in organizing the Bank of Gifford and was made its president and was also president of the Gifford Brick and Tile Company. He had been president of the Farmers and Merchants Bank of La Plata for seventeen years. He joined the Baptist Church when nineteen years old and is a member of the La Plata Baptist Church and attended services regularly until recently when his wife became ill and he was compelled to be at her bedside. She is very ill and has not been told of his death. Besides his aged wife, one daughter, Mrs. Ada Rolston, a grandson, Elvin Bragg, he also leaves two brothers, John D. Magers of St. Catherine, Missouri and James Magers of Noble, Oklahoma, four step-grandchildren, Mrs. Etta Hazen of Chicago, Mrs. Ruby Moore of Manhattan, Illinois, and Manford and Alice Rolston of La Plata, other relatives and a wide circle of friends. Funeral services were held at the La Plata Baptist Church Thursday afternoon, June 11, 1931, at 2:30, conducted by Rev. Cleve Hardgrove of Kansas City, Kansas. Interment was at La Plata Cemetery. Lavina Herrin Magers -- Lavina Herrin Magers died at her home in Gifford on Wednesday, February 3, 1937, at the age of eighty-seven years, seven months and six days. She was the daughter of David and Elizabeth Herrin and was one of a family of eleven children, eight of which preceded her in death. She was born in Ralls County, Missouri April 27, 1849. She has one living sister, Mrs. Adaline Wiggans of Elmer, Missouri, and one brother, Warren Herrin of Spearfish, South Dakota. She was married to Marion Magers November 10, 1982 and to this union a son and daughter were born, both dying in infancy. Her husband had passed away three years ago. Aunt Vine, as she was familiarly known, united with the Baptist Church at Chariton Grove in her youth and was a consistent Christian until the end. Her acquaintances were her friends and her cheery disposition endeared her to all she knew. She leaves to mourn her passing besides her brother and sister, a host of relatives and friends. Services were conducted at her home in Gifford Friday afternoon by Rev. Basil Bell and interment was made in the Indian Hill Cemetery. La Plata Home Press, February 11, 1937

Mary Ann Magers -- Mrs. J.G. Magers died Wednesday morning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E.M. Rolston, to which place she had been taken following the death of her husband in June. Mary Ann Carter, daughter of LeRoy and Harriett Carter, was born January 27, 1849 in Macon County, Missouri and died near La Plata, Missouri October 7, 1931 after a lingering illness of many months. She was married December 31, 1872 to Joseph G. Magers, the ceremony being performed in a log schoolhouse on "the Island" near where Giffored is now situated, by an uncle of Mr. Magers. To this union was born two children, the elder dying in infancy. Their only daughter is Mrs. E.M. Rolston in whose home Mrs. Magers had been since the death of Mr. Magers four months ago on June 10, 1931. Both husband and wife died on a Wednesday. One grandson, Elvin Bragg, survives and the three daughters of Mr. Rolston, Mrs. Etta Hazen, East Chicago, Illinois, Mrs. Ruby Moore, Manhatten, Illinois and Alice and Manford in the home where Alice rendered loving ministrations during the last few days of her step-grandmother. Mrs. Magers was the oldest of ten children of whom there remains Mrs. John McCollum, Brookfield, Mrs. John D. Magers, St. Catherine, Missouri, Mrs. Sam Ivers, James, John and Monroe Carter, all of Elmer, Missouri. Her parents preceded her in death about twenty years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Magers moved to La Plata from Gifford November 4, 1913 and were among the good substantial citizens of this community. Both were members of the Baptist Church here. Mrs. Magers had been a member for more than forty years. The breaking up of such homes as these, where the closest of family ties prevail, is a loss, not alone to their loved ones who remain, but to all of the community in general who unite in extending sincere sympathy to those bereft. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church here Tuesday afternoon, October 8, 1931, conducted by the Rev. Cleve Hardgrove of Brookfield. Interment was made in the La Plata Cemetery.
